Quick Actions Assist Mount Semeru Eruption Victims

As a company concerned about others affected by disasters, PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) responds quickly to disaster management in the country. One of them occurred during the Mount Semeru eruption in Lumajang Regency, East Java Province.

As is known, the Mount Semeru eruption resulted in 51 deaths and material damage in the form of houses, property, and agricultural products. The victims’ and their families’ grief was exacerbated by the eruption’s impact.

As a form of empathy, KPC deployed six Emergency Response Team (ERT) members on Monday (6/12/2021) for a two-week period. The team is made up of four rescuers, one doctor, and one paramedic.

They were successful in evacuating the dead and saving a number of properties belonging to evacuees. This team collaborates with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources’ Emergency Response Team, which is made up of rescue teams from mining companies under the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

General Manager External Affairs and Sustainable Development (ESD) Wawan Setiawan said the rescue and medical team of KPC will focus on assisting the evacuation process and providing logistical assistance as well as medical assistance in the form of medicines and their handling.

Wawan went on to say that KPC’s presence in various disasters demonstrates the company’s concern for others who are affected by natural disasters. This is consistent with one of KPC’s core values, which is concern.

“Caring is one of KPC’s core values.” We must be concerned about social issues and community needs. This is what drives KPC to be present at every human event on a local and national scale,” Wawan explained.

Currently, the condition of the victims of the eruption of Mount Semeru has returned to normal. Residents and the government focus on economic and social recovery for disaster victims, such as rebuilding damaged houses and repairing damaged farms.(*)
